How To Build A Base Tan

Over the last several years, Americans have become better educated in understanding the risks of skin cancer from overexposure to the sun, but it is also necessary for us to remember that the sun is important and beneficial for our bodies as well, as it provides us with vitamin D. One way to protect yourself from harmful UV rays that will increase your risk to skin cancer is to make sure you consistently apply sunscreen, but one problem with this method of protection is that you have to always remember to apply sunscreen. Another method for protecting yourself from getting skin cancer (from harmful UV rays) is by building a base tan, as this will keep your skin safer when you are in the sun, and there are a few easy tips to follow to ensure you are building up this base tan.

In order to build the base tan that will keep you safe in the sun (and in order to keep from putting yourself at heightened risk of skin cancer), you need to make sure you avoid getting burned – which means that you should take a slow, steady approach to building a base tan! At first, you should only go into the sun for short periods at a time (no more than 20 to 30 minutes of exposure at a time – less if you have fair skin), and during this time, still apply sunscreen!

As you start to see your base tan building, you can slowly scale back the SPF of the sunscreen you are applying, and you can increase the amount of time you are spending in the sun; you will be able to witness your tan growing darker and darker, and the darker your tan becomes, the safer you will be going out in the sun!

When you are going to be spending a significant amount of time in the sun, you should still wear sunscreen - no matter how thick your base tan is – but you can use a lower SPF if you already have a good base tan in place, and in this way, the tan will continue to darken!

How To Have A Healthy Heart

When you were a kid, you probably had a teacher who told you to clench your fist and look at it. And then, they said, “This is how big your heart is.” If you do this exercise right now, you might still find that you are surprised by just how small your heart is; however, you will no longer be surprised by how important your heart is. The body cannot function without blood, and without the heart, the body receives no blood. This means that a healthy heart is among the most important things you can maintain if you want a healthy body. The heart might seem like some abstract object tucked away inside your body, but actually, there are lots of tangible things you can do to keep your heart healthy.

A big part of keeping your heart healthy is eating right – but not just eating right in general; you have to eat heart-healthy foods. Among the foods that can help your heart remain healthy are salmon, which can keep abnormal blood clotting from occurring, and leafy green vegetables, which decrease calcification in the arteries. Apples are another food that is good for preventing blood clotting, and you can actually even help regulate your heart rhythm by eating almonds. If you want to lower cholesterol, eat oats and drink green tea; in fact, green tea can also relax the arteries. Learn what makes up a heart-healthy diet, and watch as your body begins to function at a higher level, following the health of your heart.

You can also help your cardiovascular system by taking a variety of specific supplements. Add Omega-3 essential fatty acids to your diet if you want to reduce inflammation in your blood vessels. While you can find Omega-3 essential fatty acids in some foods, there are also supplements that provide you with the necessary amount each day. Vitamin B6 is another important supplement for helping the heart function properly, as is magnesium.

The first steps of improving your heart’s health – even before you can improve it in other ways – is learning the foods and supplements that will help you. Once you begin to learn what these foods and supplements are, you will be firmly on the path to a healthy heart.

Looking for a Natural Sweetener?

People may have any number of reasons to want to drop the refined white sugar from their diets. Some people want to find a sweetener that is closer to nature, while others are looking for a sweetener with a lower glycemic index. The reason you have doesn’t really matter.  If you have decided to make a change you may be wondering what your options are.

Blue agave syrup is extracted from the same plant that is used to create tequila. Blue agave is sweeter then sugar is, because of this, it takes less agave then sugar to get to the same sweetness. It takes about a fourth less agave compared to sugar. Many companies produce their agave syrup organically. As far as flavor goes, agave syrup tastes like a mix of honey and vanilla.  The flavor is very unique to agave. The flavor may take a little bit to get used to.

Sweet sorghum syrup is referred to molasses in some parts of the country even though it is not molasses. Sorghum plants are pressed and the liquid is collected.  This liquid is then boiled down very similar to the way maple syrup is made. Sorghum also typically can be found organic because it can be grown without herbicides and insecticides.  One great thing about sorghum is it has a high iron level in it. As far as the flavor of sorghum goes it tastes fairly similar to molasses.

During the spring time of the year you can see people collecting sap for maple syrup.  Maple syrup is a great natural sugar. The sap is boiled down over a long period of time to create the syrup. Maple syrup contains high levels of manganese.  It also contains zinc and calcium. These are important elements for our bodies. Not only is maple syrup good on pancakes but it can also be used in baking, and sweetening drinks.

These are only three of many different options you have. You may also be able to find brown rice syrup, and of course there is molasses, and honey too. You should not have a hard time finding a natural option that will work for you.

Staying Healthy By Eating On A Schedule

When it comes to eating healthy, one of the most difficult things to do is to know exactly how much you should eat. Many people end up eating too little when they try to eat healthy, thinking this is good for them, or they take the advice that they should “eat throughout the day” and they eat far too much. One of the easiest ways to combat this is to put yourself on an eating schedule, with regimented meals and times of day.

Even though it might seem counterintuitive, it is true that you should eat all throughout the day; of course, this means small meals throughout the day! Breakfast – as you have certainly heard people say before – is truly the most important meal of the day. This is because, when you eat breakfast to start your day, you get your metabolism working right away; your metabolism is also the reason why it is good to eat throughout the day.

It is okay to start your day with a big meal, but this is not necessary; all you truly need to do is get your metabolism going. It is good to make sure you eat enough to hold you over for a few hours, however, as you wil not eat again until your mid-morning snack.

Your mid-morning snack should fall right in between breakfast and lunch, and should be something light and healthy. Lunch is a good time to eat something satisfying and filling; not too filling, however, as you will be eating again in just a few hours!

Sometime in the middle of the afternoon – between lunch and dinner – you should plan to have another light snack. You can eat another full meal when you get home from work or wrap up your day; but once again, remember that you may eat one more light snack a few hours later, so do not eat too much!

You will find that your metabolism is working more efficiently, and that your body is much healthier, when you start to eat five to six small meals per day at certain times of day. “Eating more often to stay slim and healthy” – as odd as this might seem – truly does work!

Exploring The Benefits Of Green Tea

Plenty of people include coffee as part of their daily routine, and while coffee is certainly not bad for you (that is – it’s certainly not bad for you when you skip the cream and sugar!), there is still at least one option that is better than coffee, and it is green tea.

Out of all the benefits to drinking green tea, the biggest of all is that it is an antioxidant; this means that it keeps some of the bad cells in your body from getting the oxygen that causes them to make you sick – in other words, green tea (when made part of your daily routine) will effectively act as a “sickness prevention” supplement.

Green tea is also a great replacement for coffee because of the fact that it gives you energy; while you will not get nearly as much caffeine from a single cup of green tea as you would from a cup of coffee, you can either double-up on green tea (after all, there is nothing wrong with drinking it throughout the day!), or you can even use it as a way to lower your caffeine intake.

Many people also feel more relaxed when they drink green tea; in addition to the calming effects of enjoying a hot drink, green tea is not nearly as acidic or strong as coffee, which makes it a much more soothing indulgence.

Green tea is also an inexpensive way to have a delicious drink, and you can prepare it in a variety of ways; one of the best (and most soothing) ways to prepare green tea is also one of the simplest: simply prepare water to your desired temperature, steep your tea bag in the water, then add a spoonful of honey and enjoy!

Regardless of whether you are looking for a replacement for coffee or are simply wanting to find a new treat you can add every once in a while, green tea is a great thing to try; you might even find that you have stumbled upon a new favorite drink!

Discovering Healthy Alternatives To Brownies

If you are trying to eat healthy, one of the toughest things can be cutting out those “favorite” foods of yours that you know you really should not eat; and if one of these foods for you is a rich, warm brownie (covered in cold vanilla ice cream, thank you very much!), it can be especially difficult to say “no.” But when you are trying to say “no” to your greatest temptations, the best way is to find similar alternatives that are much healthier, and that will therefore lessen the desire for the food you crave while keeping your body in better shape.

If the chocolate is what you crave in the brownie, one option is to simply consume a healthier form of chocolate; for instance, you can have chocolate covered raisins or chocolate covered almonds for dessert, or you can have dark chocolate – which is a great antioxidant.

If the reason you crave a brownie and ice cream is really because of the ice cream, consider having the ice cream by itself (instead of with the brownie), or replace the ice cream with something else that is cold and creamy, like yogurt.

Also, there are several ways you can make healthier brownies; if you make brownies from scratch, using cocoa, you will have a much healthier alternative to store-bought brownies; you can also replace butter with apple butter, and you can look up recipes for brownies that do not use flour.

Finally, moving away from the treat entirely is the best way to replace such foods as brownies – replacing the “dessert” portion of your night with something that is tasty and sweet, but is still healthy; there are a number of cookbooks with healthy dessert ideas, and when you pick up one of these, it can be much easier to make the switch away from brownies.

When you try to replace something in your diet (especially something as delicious as brownies!), it can be difficult at first; but the more you keep at it, the easier it will become!

How To Get Started With Yoga

The benefits of yoga are vast and far reaching, which makes yoga a wonderful addition to just about any lifestyle; not only does yoga help you to get into better shape, but it can also help you to have a healthier body, it will help with your breathing, and it will even help with your quality of life, as it can make you more relaxed, at ease, and peaceful. But while many people are aware of these benefits of yoga – and while many of these same people might even have a desire to begin engaging in yoga – a lot of people do not know exactly how they should go about getting started with yoga; while the main key to getting started with yoga is to simply “get started,” here are a few things to keep in mind on your way to becoming a yoga master!

image

Motivation: Due to the fact that yoga causes relaxation of the mind and body, many people tend to think of yoga as an “easier” workout than something such as jogging or hitting the gym, but while yoga is certainly less exhausting than these other workouts, it is still a workout, and you will need to view it as such in order to ensure that you are keeping up with it!

Mat: Because a large part of yoga entails putting your body in unusual positions, and putting weight and pressure on parts of your body that are not used to having weight and pressure put on them, it will be important that you keep your body protected with a yoga mat.

Movies: You should also get some yoga movies as part of your initial investment, as without these, you will have no clue what you are doing as you try to get started!

You will not automatically become a yoga master just from following these tips – but when you take the right approach to getting started with yoga, you will be well on your way to using yoga as a pleasant, relaxing way to improve your health and stay in shape.

Eating Right While You Hike

When it comes to taking good care of your body, eating right is always an important part, and hiking is a great way for you to keep your body in good shape – but many people who go hiking fail to draw the correlation between these two things, realizing that eating healthy while you hike is also important. After all, the main place your body will get energy from is from food, and when you are exerting yourself all day long, you will want to also be replenishing by eating the right foods; here are a few foods for you to consider when you are going hiking, as all of these will be easy to bring with you and will give you the energy you need.

Fruit: Fruit is one of the healthiest things you can eat, and it is great for giving your body energy; when it comes to eating fruit while hiking, you can go with fresh fruit such as bananas or oranges, or you can go with dried fruit, which is lightweight and easy to carry around with you, while still giving you all the health benefits of regular fruit.

Granola: Another thing that will help you have energy as you hike is granola (and granola bars), as granola is oat-based, and oats will do a lot to keep your body going; you can purchase granola at the grocery store, or you can make your own granola using oats and a variety of ingredients.

Trail mix: Trail mix is a lightweight snack to bring hiking with you, and you will get a lot of energy from your trail mix if it has nuts and chocolate – and if you can find a trail mix that also has dried fruit in it (or even granola in it!), you will be in even better shape.

Among these options, it should be easy to find one that works for you, and this will enable you to not only treat your body right with a hike, but to do so while also giving your body the healthy energy it needs.

Getting Back to Sleep – Dealing With Insomnia in the Moment

If it’s midnight and you’re wide awake, you don’t want to hear about what you should do in the early evenings to overcome insomnia–you need answers NOW. Right this second. What can a frustrated insomniac do?

Try getting up and doing something for a bit. You may think you’re best of lying there, begging your body to please sleep, but you’ll probably just upset yourself by wishing you were asleep when your body isn’t cooperating. Think of going to sleep as landing a plane; you missed the run way the first time, so you need to circle around and try to bring it in for a landing nice and smooth this time. You may have missed your body’s natural window of sleep opportunity, but by getting up and then going back to bed again, you may be able to get to sleep in thirty minutes or so.

Try the old standby – warm milk. It’s true: warm milk will make you sleepy. If you’re not crazy about warm milk, try a natural sleep tea like Valerian or Chamomile, both of which are quite effective.

Do something relaxing and boring. Dim the lights, and think of something that will make you get drowsy. Refuse to watch TV, play electronics, or work on your computer; the electronic stimulation will keep you up. Instead try something like meditation, knitting, or reading a light magazine.

Construct a plan. If you suspect your insomnia is linked to a concern or stress, trying writing out what you can do about it. Don’t send emails or take action; instead just write out what you can do and what you can’t do.

When you’ve exhausted all the possibilities, go back to bed and try to go to sleep. Sweet dreams!

Health Benefits of Owning a Dog

image

Thinking about dog ownership, but aren’t sure if you’re ready to take on the extra cost and responsibility? The following are ways owning a dog will improve your health.

If you own a dog, you’ll be more likely to exercise. Your dog will beg you for walks, which will help you get outside more. The fact that your dog will love the walks so much will help you look forward to this form of exercise, too. You may find your pet will motivate you to walk or run on days when you might have skipped exercise altogether. Consider other ways to exercise with your dog. Play fetch and teach tricks, using props like frisbees, stuffed dog toys, and balls. All of this will get your up and moving, which will burn calories and improve your health.

Dog ownership can lower blood pressure. When doctors studied pet ownership and health benefits, they discovered petting your dog lowers your blood pressure. When your dog asks for a belly scratch, take the time to brush or pet him all over, helping both you and him to be happier and healthier.

Owning a dog attracts attention from other dog lovers, which can result in meaningful social connections. Even in big cities like New York City, where people don’t talk to each other much, people find dogs to be a good ice breaker. If you visit doggie parks and pet stores, you’ll find plenty of people who love to talk to you about your pet. It’s important to have positive interactions with other people, and your dog can bring those interactions to you.

It’s been determined that dog ownership helps with emotional strength and resilience. Studies have shown that the unconditional love and enthusiasm of a dog improves emotional health. In fact, dog owners tend to live longer than those who don’t own pets. If you find yourself struggling with negative emotions, a dog may be the answer.

Worried about your health? Consider visiting a pet shelter today.
